Sweet Sister Godrey

 

This is Sister Godfrey.  She has been Austin's Primary teacher for nearly 2 years.  She is the BEST teacher you could ever ask for.  She is single and has no children of her own, so her Primary kids are like HER kids.  Not only does she teach them quality lessons in church each week, but she goes to their baptisms, gives them gifts and cards (Austin keeps all of her cards), and even has attended some of their extracurricular activities.  We just adore Sister Godfrey.

 

 

About two months ago, Sister Godfrey started having some health problems.  She ended up having surgery to remove her gall bladder, but never fully recovered.  It was discovered just recently that she has cancer.  It is just heart breaking and devastating.  Her health is declining fast and we worry that she won't be here with us much longer.

 

 

Almost every week, Austin rides his bike over to her house, usually on Sundays, to visit with Sister Godfrey.  She looks forward to his visits and asks him to come see her all the time.  Austin has a special bond with her that is hard to describe in words.  It is so sweet to see how he treats her.  We decided to make a book for her, a book of notes of encouragement, hope, and love.  We got all of her Primary kids to each write a note and take a picture, as well as some of the sisters in our ward.  We plan to give it to her after Thanksgiving in hopes that it may lift her spirit and let her know how loved she really is.

 

 

I recently felt that I needed to prepare Austin for the possibility that Sister Godfrey might not make it.  He obviously knew that she was sick and not doing well, but didn't know the extent of things.  I didn't want him to "write her off" or stop praying for her, but I also wanted to prepare him in case something changed, so that way he wouldn't be completely blindsided by the news.  It was one of the hardest conversations I've ever had with him.  He broke down in tears, and that broke my heart.  I told him that we will continue to pray for her though, pray that she will be healed and comforted, and also for her to feel of our love.  I think it is good for Austin to deal with these emotions and understand and build a testimony of the plan of salvation better.

 

 

We hold out hope that Sister Godfrey will get better and recover from her cancer, but if not, we take comfort knowing that our Heavenly Father has a plan for each of us, wants us to be happy, and that we will be reunited with our loved ones again someday....
