Thanksgiving in Logan

Kari and Bridgett holding 3 of the 4 babies-Grayson, Rorie and Carson (and no, they're not sisters! Mother and daughter!)

Aunt Kimi swimming with Maecee and Maka

The boys playing some hoops in the pool (look at all those white boys! Notice the ONE "brown one"!:)

Me and my two goobers

Austin and his cousin, Ethan aka "Eth-monster" playing some video games

Maecee Moo and Carson playing (she was so cute with him and he just loves her!)

The two rug-rats wrestling and "sword" fighting (do they not look like they're going to make-out though? :)

Dad and Carson

Uncle Brett wrestling with the kiddos-good times!

We headed to Logan to spend Thanksgiving with Eric's family this year, and figured out that it's been 4 years since we spent that holiday in Logan! As always, it was complete caosis, but so much fun! Thanksgiving diner was spent at Eric's eldest sister's house which is conveniently located across Skyview High School (where her husband works), so we swam in the pool and played some b-ball too. We even got to webcam with Grandpa Mac and Donna in Russia (they're on a mission)! Fun times. Other than that, we did some light shopping (although I hate shopping that weekend), went to see "Bolt" (loved it), hung out and played, had a big friend get-together, and of course, the boys did a lot of watching football and playing ball together. I didn't take too many pictures unfortanetly and for some reason, half of them are all fuzzy, so I apologize! Thanks for the memories, McEvoys, until next time...

Twilight premiere

Last night I went to the much anticipated midnight premiere of "Twilight" with about 20 girlfriends. I still really can't believe I did that because as much as I enjoyed the Twilight book series, I wouldn't really consider myself a "die hard" plus, I am so not a night owl anymore! We ended up going to dinner and getting to the theater at around 9pm to get seats together. Luckily, there were 6 screens showing the movie, so we all got to sit together right smack in the middle. For 3 hours, we chatted and counted down the minutes to the movie. I seriously felt like I was in high school all over again! Not to mention 2/3 of the crowd WAS high school girls! I was a little worried that I wouldn't make it without dozing, but several Diet Cokes and 20 friends sure did the trick!

I have to say that I didn't have huge expections for the movie, mostly because movies are never as good as the books. And it's impossible for them to be as good because the book has more time to build up the plot and the relationships between the characters. I will say, however, that I did enjoy the movie for entertainment purposes, but I was disappointed that it didn't build up the characters relationships with each other (esp the Cullens) a little better. Also, Edward wasn't as HOT as the book depicts him (which even by Brad Pitt standards would be hard to find). All in all, it was a fun movie to see, but the best part was actually just spending time with friends (without kid interruptions!). What a blast we had!

Mr. I-LOVE-FOOD

This little guy loves food and will eat anything already! Thank goodness because Austin was completely different as a baby. He would eat any baby or pureed food, but when it came to solids, he had a major thing with certain textures and would gag and spit it up. Carson literally hasn't met a food he doesn't like-he wants everything we're eating and has no problem with any texture or taste. The funniest thing though is everytime I put him in the high chair and feed him, it's like he hasn't food for days! He kicks his feet, wiggles his fingers/arms, and makes all these noises/shrieks because he's so excited to eat. The sound effects are quite amusing, he really does enjoy eating! One these days I'll be sure to video tape it...

Parenting Class

A couple of months ago I enrolled in a BYU-Idaho extension class, called Postive Parenting. I really didn't know much about the course, except that the instructor was amazing and that you would leave the class each week feeling uplifted, inspired, and filled with new ideas/techniques on parenting. Little did I know that this class would do all these things and more! This class literally changed my life! I really can't say enough about the instructor either, her name is Carleen Tanner and she has 9 children (all grown now), and had them in 10 years (yeah, I know a little crazy)! Also noteworthy, she has taught this course for 15 years, so her experience really shows.

To highlight some of this semester's classes, I wanted to write just a little snip-it or something that stuck out to me each week. We kept journals all semester along with notes, (and we even had weekly "homework" to help us practice some of these things) so this is mostly for me to remember all the great things I learned!

CREATING A HOUSE OF ORDER:
*The key to building a strong foundation is to take our time to teach the principles of the gospel (otherwise the foundation won't be sturdy!) to our children.
*The challenge is not do more, to do wiser!
* Having order and routines creates a sense of peace, harmony, and responsibilty. It also increases the Spirit and decreases contention in the home.

TRADITIONS:
*Traditions in a family are vital because they create a sense of belonging, a sense of identity, and emotional and physical security.
*We need to make it a tradition or ritual to "meet and greet at the crossroads" daily, meaning we make physical contact with each other (hug, kiss, etc) everytime we leave or come (ie. work, school, etc).
*We need to be careful that we focus on the actual tradition rather than the intensity of the preparation (ie. CHRISTMAS!)

DISCIPLINE:
*Look for the good, mention it, and express heartfelt appreciation daily. Do not criticize!!!
*Learn to listen by seeking to understand them first, validate their feelings and express understanding if not agreement, share your feelings, and then allow them to tell you the correct response or action needed.
*Help our children feel the Spirit. When they feel the Spirit, they WANT to do what's RIGHT.

PRAISE VS. ENCOURAGEMENT: (one of my favorite classes)
*Praise is an external evaluation (meaning they need outside validation to form their sense of self-worth). Encouragement is a recognition of effort. It is saying positives that give our children an "inner" sense of self-worth.
*Praising words like "You're the best!" (superlatives) create competition between siblings.
*When your child has done something wrong, you can use encouragment, praise you cannot.
*If you're not sure how to use/phrase encouraging words, then ask youself "WHY?" to statments like, "You're awesome!" The answer to that is ENCOURAGEMENT!
*Keys to encouragement:
1. Learn the language of encouragment
2. Learn the childs love language
3. LISTEN!
4. SEEK to understand perspective
5. Acknowledge their feelings
6. Encourage them to find a solution (often with your help if they're young)
*For every 1 negative comment, you need 10 positive comments to balance it out
*Children that often rebel are discouraged!
*Reinforce the positive by words and actions!

COMPETITION VS. COOPERATION: (to go along with previous class/subject)
*Competition can be healthy if motive is good. (ie. self-improvement, not better than someone else)
*Competition in families isn't good if we compare or pit our children against each other. It leads to pride and often feelings of inadequacy (not good enough).
*Instilling the Spirit of Cooperation:
1. Use the language of love and faith. Have a happy attitude and acknowledge the good you see in your children.
2. Use POSITIVE DISCIPLINE instead of punishment. When mistakes are made, focus on improving and moving FORWARD, not dwelling on the past.
3. Encourage children to SUPPORT each other and WORK together.
4. Encourage children to SERVE each other (ie. older sibling read to younger sibling or help with homework, practice, etc).
5. Create WIN-WIN situations at home (ie. "When everyone is ready for bed, we can have ice cream." vs. "The first one ready for bed gets ice cream first.")
6. Strive to ELIMINATE COMPETITION. Never allow bashing, name-calling, or put-downs (even in a joking way).
7. Encourage the setting of GOALS. Competition is with self, not others.
8. Encourage children to SEE and SPEAK of the GOOD in others (ie. Before tattling, child must first tell 3 nice things about the other).

TEACHING CHILDREN WORK AND RESPONSIBILITY:
*Work develops self-esteem, self-discipline, and responsibilty.
*Idle time breeds discouragement, self-indulgence, temptation, disrespect, and lack of appreciation.
*Things of great value require more work, and result in more appreciation and gratitude on our part.
*Teaching our children to work is not teaching them how to do a few jobs, it is teaching them a way of life!
*Work with our children until:
1. They know how to do the task
2. They know what the completed process looks like
*Let our children evaluate the task instead of you
*TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO WORK PAST COMFORT! So that they can develop a sense of gratitude and self-worth/accomplishment!

TEACHING CHILDREN SERVICE:
*We need to treat service/callings/etc not like job lists or checklists! We need to have the Spirit and do it with our hearts (not because we feel obligated to).
*Teach our children to share their talents, time, money, etc and do it with love!
*Service needs to be hard and inconvenient at times!
*We need to change our wording/thoughts to instead of "I have to/need to" to "I want to" or "May I". That is the true spirit of service and the key to becoming more Christ-like and increasing our faith/testimony.

TEACHING CHILREN GRATITUDE:
*Gratitude is not just a step in the prayer process, it is a successful mode of living, it is the ACTIONS we do because we FEEL gratitude.
*Gratitude is a major source of our happiness. We need to be grateful and live in the "now" instead of always thinking of the future.
*To develop gratitude we need to:
1. Avoide distractions that keep us from doing what we ought
2. Avoid magnifications of small imperfections
3. Avoid unfavorable comparisons with others
4. Gratitude comes as we remember the goodness of God
5. The Holy Ghost will bring all things to our remembrance
6. Pray until we feel gratitude! (And it will increase)
*Teaching children gratitude:
1. Let children go WITHOUT so they appreciate what they DO have
2. Encourage them to keep a gratitude journal
3. Focus on things they can be grateful for before praying
4. Help them have experiences-if they never sacrifice, they will never be grateful!
5. They have to FEEL the JOY of GIVING before they can learn to feel gratitude
6. Write thank-you notes
7. Verbally acknowledge the Lord's hand and support in your trials

MARRIAGE:
*We need to cut out unrealistic expectations of our spouse!
*We need to focus on changing OURSELVES, not our spouses.
*Work to keep yourself GOOD and your spouse HAPPY, not vice versa.
*One doesn't fall out of love, one stops DOING LOVING THINGS (Steven Covey)
*Ways to Strengthen the Marriage:
1. Rediscover the magic-remember how it all began, do it again! Spend time together alone, do loving things for each other, listen without taking offense, care about what makes the other happy!
2. Learn to speak your spouses love language!!!! Determine then teach your spouse what makes you feel loved and then determine then do what makes your spouse feel loved (Types of love languages-words of affirmation/endearment, spending quality time together, giving gifts just because, acts of service, physical touch).
3. Meet at the crossroads and touch
4. Look for the GOOD. When dating all we see is the 80% good and we easily ignore the 20% bad. After time though, our focus shifts to the 20% bad. Find strengths in your differences and let them bless your life.
5. Spend time together
6. Keep spiritually growing together. And the KEY is to PRAY together as a COUPLE each night!

Family pictures preview...

My friend Tiffany took our pictures yesterday, and I think they turned out great (I'm in love with her style/point of view)! It was a lot of fun, a bit cold, but the kids were troopers. Austin, of course, just wanted to explore the whole time and definitely kept Tiffany on her feet! Such a unique landscape too-an old red barn with a tattered fence, tire swing, and grass with the backdrop of the city behind. LOVED IT. I only have a few to share so far, but once I get more, I will post more...THANKS TIFF-you did an amazing job and can't wait to see the rest!!!!

Easily entertained

WHO NEEDS TOYS????? Seriously, this video cracks me up because when Austin was a BABY he would go nuts everytime we played the "blanket" game and waved his blankie over his head. He would just laugh hyterically, squeal, and kick his legs frantically. Carson also loves it, but notice who got more of a kick out of it! Some things never change, I guess!

Fall leaves

The other day I went to the doctor and took Carson with me (and left Austin with a friend) and when I came out, there were this patch of beautiful trees right there near the river that were still in full autumn color. Good thing I had my camera with me because I took these great shots of Carson in the leaves! What a cutie he is! And oh how I love this stage when they can just sit and not move all over the place! Too bad it won't last much longer...

By the way, the hats are made by my friend Ashley (who is amazing!), you can find them on: http://mutzebyashley.blogspot.com/

Conversation with Austin

We were driving the other day, and my conversation with Austin went as follows:

Mom: "Austin, who loves you?" (I always ask him this)

Austin: "Jesus!" (His typical response is usually Mom or Dad.)

Mom: "That's right, buddy!"

Austin: "Mom, Jesus loves me even when I don't obey or do bad things sometimes."

Mom: (trying to hold back the tears) "You're right again, buddy. He does love you ALL the time just like Mom and Dad love you all the time."

Austin: "AND, just because we do bad things sometimes, we are still good people."

Mom: "Austin, I am so proud of you! You are very smart and I hope you know how much we love you just like Heavenly Father and Jesus love you."

Can you believe this came from a 3 yr. old? After we got home, I thought about our conversation and wondered how a 3 yr. old can understand our Savior's love for us despite our mistakes better than we can sometimes! It really is as simple as that. Oh, the things we learn from our sweet children!

History is made...

Yesterday millions of Americans voted in unprecendented numbers and made a decision on who would be our next President. And Barack Obama was announced the winner and the first African American President of The United States of America. To put it simply, John McCain said last night, "This is a special election. I recognise the great significance it must have for African Americans and the special pride they must be feeling tonight." In his concession speech he paid tribute to Barack Obama for inspiring millions and declared the country had "come a long way from the cruel bigotry" of the past. How truly amazing that is! McCain also stated, "Let there be no reason now for any American not to cherish their citizenship of this, the greatest nation on earth." I especially appreciated that John McCain was so genuine, humble, and gracious in his remarks and kept saying that our nation needed to "come together" now.

In Barack Obama's speech last night at Grant Park, I was especially impressed with some of his opening remarks as to this historic event. He said, "If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer."

The immense turnout in yesterday's election was testament to the energy, excitement and expectations of a rejuvenated American democracy, as well as the fears of a nation standing at a crossroads of history. The new president faces economic and social convulsions at home, and conflict abroad and it will be interesting to see what happens as the next few months and years unfold. Even if there are those that don't support our new President, we should still do our best to support and pray for him to lead our country in a way that provides the positive changes that we need to get back on track.

Decision 2008

To begin with, I've been back and forth with this election. When the two primary candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain were decided, I honestly wasn't excited about either one. As I watched the Primaries, debates, commercial ads/endorsments, it made me even more confused on who I thought would be best suited for the next President of our country. And all the campaign negativity only made it worse (a little mud-slinging is ok, but c'mon!) It was only until a few days before Election Day, that I decided I would vote (even if I was slightly still undecided). And why? Because it is our civic duty and right, our moral obligation, to vote in this great country we live in. Some might argue that it isn't a "duty", and more a "right", but either way, I think we will feel better about ourselves in the end if we have a voice and exercise that freedom to vote. Think of all the countries in the world where the citizens don't have a voice, don't live in a democracy, and have little to no say on how their country is run. Can you imagine living in such a place? We, as fellow Americans, are so blessed to live in this country! Even if we have plenty of our own problems and crisis' right now, the fact is, we live in such a prosperous nation, a nation of opportunity, of choice, of freedom, and liberty. And we need to take pride in this fact and do the right thing, do what we often take for granted and VOTE!
